Bobby L. Smith,  Age: 74 years

Bobby L. Smith, son of John William Smith & Ruby Faye (Barnwell) Smith, was born July 12, 1933 near Tunnel Hill, Illinois.

He departed this life Monday morning, January 28, 2008, at 11:45 AM at his home near Effingham.

At the time of his passing, Bobby had attained the age 74 years 6 months & 16 days.

Bobby was united in marriage to Barbara Ruth (Robinson) on September 15, 1953 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2002.

Survivors include: 3 Sons - David L. Smith of Effingham, IL, John R. Smith of Effingham, IL and Ricky L. & Belinda K. Smith of Indianapolis, IN; 2 Daughters - Tammy S. Smith-Choate, and her husband Larry Choate, of Watson, IL and Lori S. Smith of Effingham; 9 Grandchildren - Melissa Hall, Chad Hybarger, Bobby L. & Juanita Smith, Erica & Nathan Bible, Brandy Smith, Ashley Nicole Smith, Damon Smith, Natalie Smith, and Christine & Rich Miller; 10 Great Grandchildren; His Fiancé – Louise Russell of Simpson, IL.

In addition to his Parents and Wife, Bobby was preceded in death by a Brother, John Robert Smith.


Bobby was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He served from 1953-1955.


Bobby was employed as an over-the-road truck driver by Yellow Freight Truck Line, until his retirement in 1984.

Bobby loved spending time visiting with family & friends. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing his guitar, and was an avid University of Illinois basketball fan. Bobby especially enjoyed playing checkers and traveling throughout the country to participate in checker tournaments. He was a member of the Illinois State Checker Association.

Bobby leaves his family & many dear friends to cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, February 1, 2008, at 1 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastors David & Barbara Vaughn will officiate.

Burial will be in the Gilead Cemetery, near Simpson, IL. Military graveside rites will be accorded.

Friends may call from 5-8 PM Thursday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
